Hall’s staff mourn end of era as plant closes

AXED workers at the Hall’s of Broxburn meat processing plant have mourned the end of an era after production at the factory was shut down.

Dutch owner Vion announced in October that the plant would close this year with the loss of 1700 jobs.

Since then the workforce has been laid off in stages. The last of the employees – all administrative staff – are due to leave later this month.

Stock control supervisor Rafal Gorail, 28, who lives in nearby Uphill, has worked in the factory for seven years.

He said: “It’s upsetting to see the factory close.

“Overall, it’s quite a sad scene inside. The mood is low and it’s empty now almost
everyone has left.”

The Hall’s brand name has been taken over by another Scottish firm, Browns Food Group, but it will make products at its plants in Prestwick and North Berwick.
