Groups gather across the city as historic royal celebrations continue

JUBILEE celebrations have been continuing in the Capital – with even chimpanzees paying their respects to the Queen.

While the main event, in the shape of a star-studded concert, was taking place outside Buckingham Palace last night, Edinburgh was also playing its part.

Jubilee Beacons were lit at Edinburgh Castle, Calton Hill, Arthur’s Seat, The Trefoil in Gogarburn and Corstorphine Hill as part of a national event. Beacons could be seen glowing across the Lothians.

At Edinburgh Zoo, the chimps were flying the flag for Queen and country. The 19-strong group was treated to a themed day of fun, including having some patriotic pillow cases packed with their favourite snacks.

The loyal subjects of Murrayfield Drive were also out in force as they gathered for tea and scones at their Jubilee street party.

Children from Craigentinny Primary School, meanwhile, invited elderly residents from the area to a royal celebration. After enjoying handmade cakes baked by the youngsters, the guests of honour were treated to the pupils’ own version of the Jubilee Concert.

The party continues today, with a “picnic in the park” in St Andrew Square Garden. Run by Essential Edinburgh, the event encourages people to bring their own food and drink, and there will be live jazz to help the day go with a swing.
