Green fund puts city on low CO2 route

LOTHIAN Buses is set to share in £4.4 million being made available by the Scottish Government to encourage the use of greener vehicles.

The council-owned bus firm will receive 1m to spend on new low-carbon buses, one of six operators across Scotland to be awarded funding.

Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson said: "This funding will help Scotland take another step towards a low-carbon economy, using Scotland's vast natural resources to create new green jobs.

"The Scottish Green Bus Fund will play an important role in achieving our ambitious target of reducing emissions by 42 per cent by 2020 whilst also supporting jobs in the bus manufacturing industry."

The Scottish Government said the new buses were expected to deliver an average reduction in CO2 of around 21 tonnes per year.
