Greater protection for rural postal services

Greater protection is to be offered to rural communities to prevent the removal of post boxes, the postal industry’s regulator has announced.

Watchdog Ofcom wants to make sure arrangements for a post box within half a mile of at least 98 per cent of addresses were kept in place.

Ofcom also plans to review the impact of competition on the Royal Mail towards the end of 2015 and pledged to intervene if the universal service was threatened.

This agreement guarantees that post is delivered to any UK address for one price.

Claudio Pollack, Ofcom consumer group director, said: “People across the UK have told us they place a high value on the universal postal service.”
