Graduate returns as chancellor

A HERIOTT-WATT graduate has returned to the institution after being appointed as its new chancellor.

Dr Robert M Buchan, a Canada-based Scottish mining entrepreneur, will take over from Baroness Susan Greenfield when she leaves her position at the end of November.

The philanthropist, who will spend an initial five years in the role, recently funded a Chair in Sustainable Energy Engineering at Heriot-Watt in his name.

Dr Buchan said: “It is an honour to be asked, and a privilege to accept, the position of chancellor of this university. While I have had some success in business, nothing has given me more pleasure than this appointment.

“I look forward to spending time with students and staff, and hope that in some way I can add to the experience of being at Heriot-Watt.”

Professor Steve Chapman, principal and vice-chancellor, said: “He follows in the footsteps of Baroness Susan Greenfield, who we have been privileged to have as chancellor for the past seven years. We are all delighted Dr Buchan has accepted the invitation. He is a widely admired international business figure.”
