Government stumps up for Gaelic school

THE Scottish Government has announced that it will pay £700,000 towards the cost of turning an old city primary into a dedicated Gaelic school.

City councillors will today discuss the future of Gaelic education in the Capital, with proposals set to go out to public consultation.

The two options are either creating a dedicated Gaelic school within the old Bonnington Primary in Leith or building more classrooms at Tollcross Primary, where Gaelic education is currently provided.

Refurbishing the Bonnington building will cost a total of 1.46 million.

Minister for Gaelic, Fiona Hyslop, said: "Our view is that the option in the council's paper of a dedicated Gaelic school at Bonnington could be the right solution to meeting parental demand for Gaelic education in this city.

"We are prepared to support Edinburgh with the Bonnington option."
