Golden News delights our hero Chris

AS Britain’s greatest Olympian, he is not short of
accolades.

But even with six Olympic Gold medals and two Edinburgh postboxes painted gold in his honour, Sir Chris Hoy has admitted a golden tribute in the Evening News was “amazing”.

The day after the cyclist won his sixth Olympic gold, replacing rower Sir Steve Redgrave as Britain’s most decorated Olympian, the News paid tribute to the achievement by breaking with decades of tradition and carrying a golden front page masthead.

After being presented with the souvenir edition, Sir Chris said: “It’s amazing. I thought it was cool getting a post box painted gold but it’s pretty special getting your local newspaper gold for the first time ever.”

In the same paper, calls were made for a statue to Sir Chris which he modestly batted away, saying he was flattered but could think of “better things to spend the money on”.

“I think I have had more than enough in terms of honours and accolades – perhaps a statue might be one too far! But very nice that people would suggest it.”
