Gold mine of photography

A PHOTOGRAPHIC exhibition featuring more than 18,000 pictures is to be launched tomorrow at the Scottish Mining museum.

The Behind the Shutter exhibition covers all aspects of the coal mining industry in Scotland and will be on display until the end of May.

The opening marks the completion of the final phase of a three-year project to convert the museum's collection of photographic prints into digital form.

The photographs include images of steam locomotives, underground workings, colliery layout, trade unions, the 1984-5 miners' strike, and social and community events.
