Glasgow tenement evacuated due to subsidence fears

A block of flats has been evacuated after reports that the building was subsiding.

The four-storey tenement block of eight flats and a shop on London Road, Glasgow, has been emptied and council contractors and police are at the scene.

A council spokeswoman said “movement” had been reported in the building around midday and all residents were evacuated as a precaution.

London Road has been closed between Abercromby Street and Bridgeton Cross while the building is investigated.

Glasgow City Council said contractors are working to make the building safe and that the factor has been contacted.

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said they have been made aware of the incident but are not currently in attendance.

A spokeswoman for Glasgow City Council said: “An unsafe building has sparked the evacuation of eight flats and a shop in Glasgow’s east end.

“The unsafe property at 594 London Road, Glasgow, is a four-storey tenement and the concerns centre around movement in the building. It is feared that the top-floor flat may be unstable.

“London Road is currently closed to all traffic between Abercromby Street and Landressy Street, and it will remain closed while engineers inspect the property and assess the level of risk. The concerns centre around movement in the building.

“At present, three residents have contacted Glasgow City Council’s social work department in need of emergency accommodation and building control specialists are currently on site along with police and contractors who will make the building safe in the interim.

“Any other residents who require help with accommodation are urged to contact the Hamish Allen Centre on 0800 838 502.”
