New research has found residents in Scotland’s largest city to be ten times more likely to place a winning bet at the bookies than those in Leeds, and nearly 100 times luckier than third-placed Brighton.

Propping up the table is Leicester, with a win ratio 10 per cent lower than the national average.

Gamblers in Glasgow enjoy a win ratio 15 per cent higher than the national average.

Earlier this year Antony Clark, from Merrylee in Glasgow, won £19,000 after correctly predicting 14 football results in an accumulator.

And in May 2011, an anonymous Glasgow man scooped £350,000 from a £1 bet on a seven-horse accumulator.

But the high luck factor in Glasgow may have something to do with how often the city gambles.

At eight per cent, Glaswegians make up the largest share of people betting with Ladbrokes outwith London.

A spokesperson for Ladbrokes said: “Glasgow is officially now the UK’s luckiest city. Folks in Glasgow are, on average, winning more back on each pound they bet than anywhere else in Britain.

“We wouldn’t want to recommend you move there for good fortune though – we can’t say for sure whether luck is in the locals’ blood, or in their surroundings. You might just end up bringing the average down!”

According to Ladbrokes Games, the top five luckiest cities in the UK are:

1. Glasgow

2. Leeds

3. Brighton

4. York

5. Bradford
