Give pupils more room on road, says cyclist Beaumont

WORLD-RECORD breaking cyclist Mark Beaumont yesterday threw his weight behind a campaign to encourage more children to cycle to school.

Mr Beaumont visited St Bernard’s primary in Nitshill, Glasgow, to launch the “Give Me Cycle Space” safety campaign.

It is designed to challenge the obstacles which prevent children riding bikes to school, such as their parents’ fears, and the risk posed by drivers who fail to show cyclists any consideration.

Cycling Scotland is co-ordinating the new campaign.

It follows the Pedal on Parliament protest held in Edinburgh at the end of last month, which saw around 3,000 people ride their bikes from the Meadows to Holyrood to call for cycling to be made safer.

Mr Beaumont, who broke the round-the-world record when he cycled 18,296 miles through 20 countries, said: “I’m confident the campaign will encourage drivers to give bikes plenty of room on the road. ”
