Gates boost fight against sick livestock

A CHARITY which works to combat livestock disease in the developing world has received more than £31.2 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Department for International Development.

The Global Alliance for Livestock Veterinary Medicines, which is based in Penicuik, is receiving its second grant from the Gates Foundation, and will use it to continue its work developing livestock vaccinations and making them available to farmers who depend on their animals for their livelihoods.

Dr Hameed Nuru, senior director of policy and external affairs, said: “We’re very delighted on this because it enables us to continue the second phase of our work.

“In the first part of our work we were trying to develop vaccines where they didn’t exist, or improve them where they did exist, and make them more appropriate for the developing world.

“Now we’re looking more at delivery – now they are available, how do we push them down the line to get them with the people that really need them?

“It’s extremely important to millions of people.”
