Gary’s lyrics wow judges

A LOTHIANS musician has walked off with a prestigious country song-writing award.

Gary Bonnington, from Pencaitland, East Lothian, won the best humour category at the Nashville-based Paramount song-writing contest.

Gary’s song – I’d Sell My Wheels (For A Country Girl In Heels) – beat stiff competition from lyricists across the US.

The 38-year-old father of one said: “It’s something I do in my spare time, and it was my wife Sarah who submitted the song for me as I thought I had no chance.

“The song is supposed to be funny – it’s about a guy who meets a girl wearing heels and it turns out to be a disaster.

“The band I’m in play mainly rockabilly and country covers so if I speak nicely to the other guys I might be allowed to put in a few of my own songs.”
