More than 40 Lothian and Borders Police officers are involved in the investigation.

Mr Ciania had lived in Scotland for a number of years and police are keen to talk to any of his friends or associates. Detective Superintendent Allan Jones said: “Maciej Ciania suffered at the hands of his attacker, and we are keen to trace friends and acquaintances as a matter of urgency.

“It is vital that we build a picture of Mr Ciania’s lifestyle and his movements over the past week, and I would appeal to members of the local community to get in touch, since they may well hold the key to us finding his killer.”
