Fresh calls to deal with sewage plant's stench

THE country's environmental watchdog has been criticised for not doing enough to stop foul smells emanating from a notorious sewage plant.

Campaigners who have been protesting against the "Seafield stench" for years said the Scottish Environment Protection Agency should be doing more to ensure the "sludge cake" smells stop spreading across the area.

A SEPA spokeswoman said: "In April this year, SEPA served an enforcement notice on the operators because of a problem with their odour abatement plant."

He added: "SEPA staff will continue to monitor the Seafield sludge management plant closely to ensure that the odour improvement plan is delivered in a way which minimises the risk of odour impact on the community."

Leith councillor Gordon Munro added: "It's just sloppy workmanship."
