Francis McGraw death being treated as murder

The death of the brother of former gangland figure Tam McGraw is being treated as murder, police have said.

The body of 55-year-old Francis McGraw was discovered at about 10am yesterday in his flat in Hermiston Road in the Springboig area of Glasgow.

Police initially said they were treating the death as suspicious and, after a post-mortem examination, a murder investigation was launched.

There is no suggestion at this stage that his death is connected with gangland activity, officers said.

It is the second death in the north of Glasgow in a day after a 26-year-old man was found murdered in a property in Etive Street, Shettleston, at about 4am today.

The deaths are not being linked but officers are carrying out extra patrols in the area to reassure the public.

Detective Superintendent Robbie Allan said: “I would like to reassure local people that extra officers are now on patrol in their area and that additional detectives have been drafted in from throughout the force area to find those responsible for both attacks.

“However, regarding speculation that the murder of Mr McGraw in Springboig is related to serious and organised crime, this is extremely unhelpful and could indeed jeopardise our investigation. I would like to stress that there is nothing to suggest that is the case at this time.

“There is also nothing to indicate just now that his death is linked to the murder enquiry ongoing in Etive Street, Shettleston.”

Mr McGraw was last seen by a family member at about 3pm on Saturday afternoon. Police said he had a visitor to his flat on Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

Officers want to trace the visitor and a man who was wearing a white tracksuit with blue flashes and was seen nearby in Hollowglen Road at the Camlachie burn at about 8.45am on Sunday.

Millionaire crime boss Tam McGraw died from a heart attack at his Glasgow home in 2007.

Known as The Licensee, he was a feared member of the city’s underworld with links to drug trafficking and extortion.

Regarding the death of the 26-year-old man, officers have been carrying out door-to-door inquiries and are checking CCTV footage from the area.

Detective Inspector Fil Capaldi, of Police Scotland, said: ‘’We know from our enquiries that there was a disturbance in the flat just before 4am this morning.

‘’We are keen to trace two men in Etive Street at the time, one described as white, 20 to 25 years of age and wearing a dark top with orange markings, the other in his early 30s wearing dark clothing.’’
