Fountainbridge fire put out in lengthy operation

Crews were called to the fire at a derelict building in the Fountainbridge area of Edinburgh just after midday.

The roof was “well alight” and seven engines, including two height appliances, were involved in the operation to bring the blaze under control.

Pictures posted on Twitter showed large plumes of smoke coming from the building.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was in the area of Dundee Street, opposite the Fountain Park leisure complex.

There were not thought to be any casualties as a consequence of the blaze.

A service spokeswoman said: “It was a derelict building involved. The roof was well alight.”

She said they were called to the scene at 12.02pm and about 50 firefighters were involved in the operation.

Appliances from Tollcross, Sighthill, Liberton, McDonald Road, Crewe Toll and Newcraighall were at the scene along with a number of specialist appliances, including the two height appliances.

It is understood there were also concerns about the possibility of asbestos at the scene.

Firefighting operations continue in the area, although they are now being scaled back.

Road closures were in place for a short time as the fire was dealt with, but all roads have now reopened.

Police Scotland said the doors of the Fountain Park complex were also closed for a period of 15-20 minutes during the operation while the fire was dealt with, but the complex is now fully open.
