Football fan fined for throwing smoke bomb onto busy road

A TEENAGE football fan threw a smoke bomb into the middle of a busy city centre road, causing vehicles to take evasive action to avoid a collision.

Eighteen-year old William Stewart was standing with friends outside a pub in Easter Road, Edinburgh, on November 7 last year waiting for the start of a Hibs game when the incident took place.

At the city's Sheriff Court today, Stewart of Easter Dalry Road was fined 150 after pleading guilty to acting in a culpable and reckless manner by throwing a smoke bomb onto the road, causing vehicles to take evasive action to the danger of other persons.

Fiscal Depute Bruce Macrosson said a woman, in her home, saw a large group of football supporters, including Stewart, standing outside a pub. She watched as he threw a smoke bomb into the road. The Fiscal said: "This caused two vehicles to screech to a halt". The police were contacted and after viewing CCTV footage Stewart was arrested.

Defence solicitor, Kirsten Olverman, said her client had been waiting with friends for the football match to start. One of the group produced "firework material", she said, and Stewart threw it into the roadway. "He accepts it was an act of exceptional immaturity which caused alarm to people in the area". Stewart, she added, had never been in any trouble before.
