Samantha Kay, 24, from Dundee, was desperate to leave the country after Canadian sisters Audrey, 20, and Noemi Belanger, 26, were found dead in their hotel room from suspected food poisoning.

Ms Kay’s father Dudley feared the authorities might try to keep his daughter there as a witness, after she too was struck down by the mystery bug.

Mr Kay, 65, paid for a flight to allow his daughter to flee Thailand because he feared she may get caught in the “crossfire” of any investigation.

The guesthouse owner said: “She is now in Malaysia and is going to Sydney shortly. I couldn’t leave her there any longer.

“The authorities are carrying out an investigation into where the food poisoning has originated, and trying to find out which hotel sold the food.

“Sami will definitely help with that, but my worry is the authorities would force her to stay there until the investigation over, because she was such close friends to the girls.

“She will help with any enquiries from Australia, or return to speak to the authorities if they pay for her fees back.”
