Food banks bid to help vulnerable

TALKS to establish a network of food banks to help the “most vulnerable in our society” are being held in Midlothian next month.

The authority’s Regeneration Team will host a public meeting aimed at setting set up a food bank scheme in partnership with local businesses, churches, charities, supermarkets, community groups and the public.

Ewan Gurr from the Trussell Trust, which has helped launch more than 200 food banks, will explain how the community can ensure they are a success.

It is anticipated the trust will provide support and training to the proposed Midlothian food banks, while local volunteers will help organise collections and distribution. The meeting is being held at McSence Business park in Mayfield on July 6 from 1.30pm to 3pm.

Councillor Cath Johnstone, Cabinet Member for Adult and Community Care, said: “I urge everyone interested in supporting this project to come along.”
