Flats plan is submitted for former nightclub site

Cameron Guest House group has submitted a planning application to turn the old Sanctuary nightclub and two neighbouring empty shops in Duke Street into five one-bedroom flats.

The grade A-listed building was once part of Leith Central Station.

The space on a high- profile corner in Leith has been advertised for the past three years, but has been unable to secure a new commercial tenant. One of the shops was previously used for the Leith Festival.

The proposal has been submitted to Edinburgh City Council planners.

Leith councillor Chas Booth said: “Residents would certainly be pleased to see a responsible neighbour move into that premises given it’s been empty for so long.”

Cameron Guest House won permission in a successful appeal to the Scottish Government to turn the former Leith post office building in Constitution Street into a guest house.

The plans had previously been rejected by the council, with fears the listed Leith building would become a haven for the homeless.
