Flats evacuated as fire breaks out in child’s bedroom

A WOMAN and four children have been taken to hospital after a fire broke out in a block of flats.

Three boys, aged six, four and three, a ten-year-old girl and a 30-year-old woman were taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for precautionary checks after fleeing their ground-floor home.

A woman and her 15-month-old baby were rescued from the flat above by firefighters on an extended ladder.

And an elderly woman who lived in the block was also led to safety.

Firefighters were called to the incident in Parkhead Drive, Sighthill, around 5.30pm yesterday.

A spokeswoman for Lothian
and Borders Fire and Rescue
said the fire started in a bedroom
and the building was filled with smoke.

“There was a fire in a child’s bedroom on the ground floor. We used a ladder to rescue a 22-year-old female and a 15-month-old baby from the flat above.”

The blaze was quickly extinguished and crews made the block safe before an investigation into the cause of the fire begins.
