Five rescued as fire sweeps through flat

Five people were rescued from a burning building when a fire ripped through a ground floor flat.

The blaze broke out just after 2:30am in South Sloan Street, Edinburgh, and left the three-storey block “heavily smoke logged”.

Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was “well alight” when crews arrived. Two of the rescued were taken to hospital.
