Five candidates to fight Inverclyde by-election

Five candidates will contest the Westminster by-election in Inverclyde on 30 June.

Ukip's Mitch Sorbie, SNP's Anne McLaughlin, Labour's Iain McKenzie, Liberal Democrat Sophie Bridger and Tory David Wilson will go head-to-head in the battle to become the area's new MP. Nominations for candidates closed yesterday at 4pm.

The campaign to replace the late David Cairns MP gathered pace this week, as candidates took to the streets to gain votes.

Ms McLaughlin, born in Greenock and brought up in Port Glasgow, said the SNP was "the right party at the right time for Inverclyde" and vowed to fight for the best deal for the local area. Labour's candidate launched his action plan for the area. Mr McKenzie said: "I've lived here all my life, so I'm now standing to be Inverclyde's man in Westminster."

Liberal Youth Scotland leader Ms Bridger criticised the SNP for promising to bring jobs to Inverclyde while slashing the budget for regeneration.

She said: "The SNP's candidate says jobs are her top priority but she was in the Scottish Parliament when the SNP government slashed funding for local jobs by 40 per cent."

Mr Wilson was out campaigning for the Tories as nominations closed. He said: "This elections matters to the people of Inverclyde. They deserve a local champion."
