Firms urge fair trading on new site

FAIRTRADE products are being promoted in East Lothian with a new directory of companies.

Local residents and visitors to the county can find out where they can buy and enjoy Fairtrade products, with the production of a new online directory created by the East Lothian Fairtrade Network in association with East Lothian Council.

Cllr Paul McLennan, East Lothian Council's Fairtrade Champion, said: "Fairtrade aims to help tackle poverty in developing countries by making sure that farmers have access to the developed world's markets and receive a fair price for their products and enjoy decent working conditions.

"Support for fair trade had risen considerably in recent years and local shoppers have lobbied successfully for an increase in Fairtrade goods to be available in our towns.

"Local businesses have also supported this initiative which continues to grow as the range of goods produced and marketed within Fairtrade increases."
