Firefighters urge public to avoid DIY bonfire events

Firefighters are urging the public to attend organised bonfire and fireworks events this weekend rather than “DIY” displays at home.

The focus behind the plea is to prevent injuries, as well as making sure the service is not stretched unnecessarily.

Community Safety Manager David Lockhart, from Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service, said: “At this time of year the service is regularly called out to extinguish uncontrolled or badly sited bonfires, putting pressure on resources immediately available for more serious incidents, including house fires and road traffic accidents.”

He added: “Every year, hundreds of people in the UK are injured by fires and fireworks. To ensure the safety of you, your family and friends, the best option is to attend an organised event.

“Fireworks are essentially explosives so never mess around with them, it could have serious consequences. Setting up your own bonfire will mean it needs to be properly supervised and extinguished correctly. Let others do it for you and enjoy an evening out.”
