Firefighters battle blaze at Glasgow's Kelvin Hall

One of Scotland's best-known sports arenas has been temporarily closed after it was damaged in a fire.

The alarm was raised at around 9am today after a blaze broke out in the health suite sauna area at Kelvin Hall in Glasgow.

Firefighters contained the fire and prevented it spreading to the running track and other parts of the building.

No-one was hurt and the 30 people in the building were evacuated.

Glasgow Life, which operates the centre, is planning a clean-up operation.

There was some water damage to the building as a water pipe was damaged.

It is anticipated that the centre will be closed over the weekend, and customers were advised to check the organisation's website for updates.

A Glasgow Life spokesman said: "We are very grateful both to the vigilance of our staff and to the emergency services for their quick response, which led to the fire being extinguished quickly and without injury."

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said that 14 fire vehicles were at the scene at the height of the incident.

Assistant chief officer David Goodhew said: "Our firefighters avoided what could have been catastrophic fire damage to one of Glasgow's landmark buildings.

"Staff at Kelvin Hall have asked that we do all we can to save the venue's running track and I am pleased to say we were able to do so."

Situated in the west end of the city, Kelvin Hall has an indoor athletics track and climbing wall.

It offers a wide range of activities and also hosts international sports events.
