Firefighter is accused of stealing iPhone

A FIREMAN has been accused of stealing an iPhone from the scene of a fatal blaze.

The 43-year old crew commander from Tollcross fire station’s white watch has been suspended following the alleged incident in Viewcraig Street, Dumbiedykes, in April.

A 48-year-old woman found suffering burns and smoke inhalation died later that month in hospital.

Firefighters had entered other flats in the close to check they were empty and a phone was later reported missing which led to the launch of the inquiry. The accused man is believed to have claimed he found the phone outside the flat.

A Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said: “A member of staff is suspended. The investigation is ongoing and will be the subject of disciplinary proceedings.”
