Fire at Dingwall farm continues for second day

FIREFIGHTERS in the Highlands were still at the scene of a major fire at a farm near Dingwall earlier today, almost 18 hours after they were first called out to tackle the blaze.

Units from Dingwall, Inverness, Beauly, Fortrose and Invergordon spent the night bringing the blaze in a steading at Woodlands Farm under control.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said the control room in Inverness had been alerted to the blaze at 6.30pm last night.

He continued: “A steading at the farm was well ablaze upon arrival and the steading contained fertiliser. There were around four tonnes of fertiliser within the steading but it didn’t pose a risk to the property due to wind direction.

“Firefighters used four main jets to tackle the fire. Appliances from Dingwall, Inverness, Beauly, Fortrose and Invergordon have all been involved in the incident and crews have been working on a rotational basis through the night and into this morning. Crews are still at the scene carrying out damping down operations and checking for any signs of hot spots.”

Incident commander, Group Manager Robert Scott, said: “The crews did a great job in preventing the fire spreading to other parts of the farm buildings with limited water supplies from a burn and shuttling water from a hydrant over a mile away.

“They were faced with a large fire which involved the buildings themselves, bales, farm machinery and a quantity of fertiliser. The fire caused the roof in parts of the steading to collapse leaving areas unsafe adding to the challenges in applying water from a place of safety to prevent the incident escalating.”
