Festival offers a chance to try hand (or foot) at sport

Sports clubs across Midlothian are gearing up for this year’s East of Scotland Festival of Sport, which begins on Saturday.

The festival, which runs until September 14, takes place across the whole east of Scotland region, including the Lothians, Edinburgh, Borders and Fife, and is organised by local authorities in partnership with local sports clubs and sportscotland.

A wide range of Midlothian clubs are taking part offering special events, coaching sessions, open days and other activities, with everything from karate to tennis, and boxing to trampolining on offer.

Last year’s festival was declared a great success with many local sports clubs increasing their membership as a direct result of their participation.

Councillor Bob Constable, Midlothian Council leader, said: “After a fantastic Olympics, the Festival of Sport offers even more opportunities for local residents to enjoy sporting activities and see what local sports clubs have to offer.

“Whether you want to get back into a sport you love, or whether you want to try your hand at something entirely new, there’s sure to be something to suit your interests.”
