Female body recovered from Fort William canal

A WOMAN’S body and car have been recovered from the Caledonian Canal at the famous Neptune’s Staircase locks near Fort William.

The emergency services were called to Benavie just before 2pm on Wednesday after a member of the public spotted the body in the water.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Police, Ambulance and Coastguard all attended and the woman was recovered from the water.

“She was taken onwards to Belford Hospital (in Fort William) by road ambulance but sadly the woman died.

“In addition a car was recovered from the canal by the Police Scotland Dive and Marine Unit, which belonged to the woman.”

She added: “Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death but there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances.

“No further details are available until confirmation that all next of kin have been informed. A report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
