Father of 16 accused of Dundee pub death stabbing

A FATHER of 16 appeared in court yesterday accused of murder after allegedly stabbing a man to death outside a pub in Dundee.

Jamie Cumming is alleged to have knifed James Getty to death outside The Maltman pub on the city’s Mains Road late on Friday.

Paramedics were called to the scene at around 11pm after receiving reports of a man lying injured in the street following an assault outside the bar, which is just yards from Dundee FC’s Dens Park.

Police were called and Mr Getty, known as Jimmy, a father of three, was rushed to the city’s Ninewells Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Cumming, 35, was detained by police on Saturday before being arrested and charged over the incident. Yesterday he made a brief appearance in private on petition at Dundee Sheriff Court accused of murdering Mr Getty.

It is alleged that on 1 June at the junction of Mains Road and Mid Road, Dundee, Cumming assaulted Jimmy Getty and repeatedly struck him on the body with a knife or similar instrument.

Cumming, of Morgan Street, Dundee, made no plea or declaration during the 30 second hearing. His lawyer, Andy Lyall, made no application for bail and Sheriff Tom Hughes remanded him in custody.

The case was continued for further examination and Cumming is expected to appear in court again next week for a further hearing.

The pub was closed by police and part of the road was cordoned off while scenes of crimes officers carried out a thorough investigation. A close relative of Mr Getty laid flowers at the scene of the crime in tribute.

The woman, who asked not to be named, said: “He was a decent guy and is going to be sadly missed. Jimmy did not deserve this and I hope the police catch whoever is responsible.”
