Thomas Lamb, 46, was found by residents in Restalrig Circus, Edinburgh, at about 1am on Saturday after police were called to a disturbance.
He was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary but was later pronounced dead.
Gary Sim, 31, was charged with assault and murder over the death at Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday and made no plea or declaration.
Mr Lamb’s parents, John and Margo, said their son had lost his daughter and sister in recent years.
A statement released through Police Scotland read: “Our son Thomas was a lovely, caring, thoughtful son. He would help anyone who needed help.
“Thomas liked to go fishing, play pool, follow his beloved Hibernian Football Club.
“He had several hobbies and was very artistic. He was a wonderful uncle to Kim and Kiera, and was a loving nephew and cousin.
“Thomas has had a lot to cope with these past few years, having lost his sister, his only sibling, then his 16-year-old daughter.”
Mr Lamb had also cared for his parents, who have health problems, the statement said.
They added: “His death has been unthinkable and we would ask that our privacy is respected at this very difficult time.”
