Family still in dark over death

The family of an Edinburgh dad who died in mysterious circumstances on holiday in Spain has spoken of their anguish at facing Christmas no closer to finding out what happened.

Marketing worker Chris Lindsay, 34, vanished while on holiday with colleagues on the Costa del Sol.

He was said to have been found with severe injuries and doctors believe he was the victim of a savage assault.

But more than two months on, his family still do not know whether there is going to be a criminal investigation.

His father, Harry Lindsay, 63, said: “Chris’s body was taken away from us for the post-mortem and since then we haven’t heard anything at all.”

Chris had been having drinks with his colleagues from the Marketing Company, based in Glasgow, on Saturday, October 1, when he became separated from them.

His girlfriend, Vikki Solomon, from East Craigs, with whom he had a son, Jude, now five months old, received a call from a Spanish hospital on Tuesday, October 4, to tell her Chris was in a critical condition. He died on October 7, with the official cause recorded as liver failure.

It is understood Chris was found unconscious by the police just before 6am on the Sunday.

His family was told Chris was unconscious when he arrived at the hospital and that when he did come round, he spoke to a member of staff and said he was attacked.

His father, a care worker who flew out with his other son to be with Chris in hospital, said: “We were hoping to have found out what happened before Christmas, but now we have to go into next year not knowing.

“This is not an easy time for the family at all – it’s soul destroying.

“It’s certainly not like Britain, the Spanish are taking a long time to get anything done.”

The family has been receiving the help of MP Pamela Nash, who has been writing to the hospitals in Spain and liaising with the Spanish authorities in the hope of finding out what happened.

Mr Lindsay said: “We had thought it would be about one or two weeks before we were told anything, but it’s now been 12.

“Obviously, everything will be stopping for the Christmas period.

“You have to watch out because you can torment yourself completely by trying to work out in your head what happened.

“You think to yourself, was he kicked about, was he hit, was he lying in the street? Or did he just fall?

“But I know that Chris has not had an easy time and that there’s been a struggle.

“This is a hard time to get through – we just have to do our best and know that when we do go into the new year, we will have to start chasing things again.”
