A fair way to increase green awareness

EVERYTHING from face painting to free bike repairs will be on offer at a special environmental fair to be held in the Capital this Friday.

Friends of Gyle Park and Corstorphine Hill will also be on hand to tell primary school pupils about the many species of flowers and wildlife that make up the local environment.

There will also be a CCTV van to check out, along with free bike repairs from Dr Bike. Lothian and Borders Police will also be offering free identity markings for bikes.

Environmental wardens, biodiversity officers and recycling advisors will explain more about community safety and the things everyone can do to protect the environment. And more information will be available on Safer Routes to Schools and how Edinburgh is helping with the Fairtrade City initiative.

The event is being run by Eco-Schools, an international programme which encourages pupils and teachers to develop projects that improve their awareness of wider green issues.

Councillor Marilyne MacLaren, Education Leader, said: "More pupils and teachers than ever are joining the eco-schools movement and schools are definitely leading the way in highlighting environmental concerns."

The event kicks off on Friday 17 June between 1.30pm and 3.00pm at Gylemuir Primary School, Wester Broom Place.
