She was believed to have been out walking her German shepherd, which was found alive near her body in Cranhill Park off Edinburgh Road.

The 53-year-old was last seen by a member of her family, believed to be her husband, John, at about 5pm on Friday. Police Scotland officers are trying to establish what time she left her home to walk the dog.

Following the discovery of her body, forensic officers cordoned off part of the park near the Cranhill Beacon Play Centre – an activity centre for five to 12-year-olds – to examine the scene.

It remains unclear how Mrs Campbell died but after initially treating her death as suspicious, police launched a murder inquiry following a post-mortem examination.

Mrs Campbell lived in a flat in Bellrock Street, a short walk from the park’s northern entrance. Officers have been carrying out door-to-door inquiries in the area and checking CCTV footage. Their investigations are continuing in an effort to trace her movements during the 14 hours between the last time she was seen and the discovery of her body.

Those leading the investigation moved to reassure local people that extra police patrols were in the area.

Detective Chief Inspector Colin Carey, from the force’s Major Investigation Team West, said: “Extensive inquiries are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the death and a motive for this murder. Detectives are currently trying to piece together Mrs Campbell’s last movements.

“She was last seen by a family member around 5pm on Friday night, so I would urge anyone who saw her between then and Saturday morning to come forward. Her German shepherd-type dog was with her in the park, so we are trying to establish when she left her house to take the dog for a walk.”

It is understood Mrs Campbell worked in a shop known locally as Lamlash store – selling general conveniences – and was well known within the Cranhill community.

A family friend, who asked not to be named, said yesterday: “Jean was a nice, quiet lady who never did harm to anybody.”

Another Cranhill local who knew the family wrote on Twitter: “She was a lovely woman… her whole family quiet people. total shocked.”

One resident, who also wished to remain anonymous, said: “I heard that the woman’s husband came home from work to find her missing. He went looking for her and found her in the park and shouted at a taxi driver that his wife was dead. It’s really awful. I wouldn’t walk my dog in that park. It never feels very safe.”
