Extremists in bid to march through city

FAR-right extremists have applied to hold a march in the city centre only months after a similar parade needed a massive police presence to keep rival protest groups apart.

The Scottish Defence League (SDL) said it had applied to hold a procession from East Market Street to the Scottish Parliament on September 29.

Leaders of the SDL said they wanted to hold the event to call for justice over the deaths of murdered Blackpool teenager Charlene Downes and Robert Fleeting, who was found hanged at an RAF base in Oxfordshire last year.

But opponents said they said would hold a counter-
demonstration.

A city council spokesman said: “The council has been notified of an intended procession and this will be considered in due course, working with the police and other organisations as appropriate.”
