Exploring the abandoned Loudoun Castle Theme Park

There is something about an abandoned theme park that sparks curiosity.The image of a deserted place which once brought fun and enjoyment to many inevitably leads us to question how it ended up in such a state.

Loudoun Castle Theme Park in Ayrshire was at one time widely advertised as a must-visit destination for families and thrill-seekers alike.

Then the radio adverts went quiet, the advertising billboards disappeared and the park began to fade from memory.

A victim of the recession, it closed in 2010.

Alistair is part of a growing online community that documents derelict buildings in both urban and rural locations that intrigue and inspire.

It is a concept which has a broad appeal - Abandoned Scotland already has over 12,000 Facebook fans despite only launching

a few months ago.

Alistair, who runs the page with friend Mark, requested we use his first name only. He prefers to remain anonymous as is norm for many urban explorers who value the freedom such anonymity brings.

He said: “We’ve had a lot of messages of support from people who’ve seen the pictures or watched the videos we’ve produced of Loudoun Castle.

“One person said it made them cry, others said they wished that the park would open back up again.”

It is unlikely, however, that Loudoun Castle will ever reopen.

Alistair says its current owners - who gave him access to the park - are in the process of selling its rides and

have kept the park in situ so that they can be shown to prospective buyers.
