Ex-rugby finance chief sues former bosses

THE former finance director of the Scottish Rugby Union is suing his former bosses in court for sacking him, while also claiming unfair dismissal at an employment tribunal.

Eamon Hegarty, who had a controversial tenure at the SRU, launched the two-pronged attack after being relieved of his job in September.

Mr Hegarty’s claim, which also involves his pension contributions, is due to call again in court later this month as lawyers for both sides contest the case.

Meanwhile, Mr Hegarty is taking the SRU to an employment tribunal, alleging that he was unfairly dismissed from his post.

The former executive, who is a chartered accountant with more than 20 years’ experience, is also claiming a breach of contract over the decision.

It is believed that Mr Hegarty’s salary was around £200,000 a year, including bonuses and pension contributions, by the time he left.

Mr Hegarty was removed from the SRU within days of new chief executive Mark Dodson taking over from interim CEO Jock Millican.

Mr Hegarty was a friend and business partner of former Scottish Rugby Union chief executive Gordon McKie, who left last June.

An SRU spokesman declined to comment on the ongoing case.
