It is understood that Mr Marr and his wife Anne have flown back to Dundee from holiday to comfort Karson’s parents, their granddaughter Demi, 20, and husband Martin McNally, 25, whose home is in the Fintry area of the city.

The anguished family said in a statement: “We have been left utterly devastated by this tragic accident.

A spokeswoman for the Tayside Division of Police Scotland confirmed that the force was continuing to investigate the “full circumstances” of the sudden death of an infant in the city.

She said: “Emergency services attended at an address in Finmore Street, Dundee, at about 7.30pm on Monday, 29 April, after a ten-month old baby boy had taken gravely unwell. Attempts were made to resuscitate the infant at his home address and these efforts were continued by paramedics en route to Ninewells Hospital. Tragically he was pronounced dead at hospital a short time later.”
