Event will give voice to LGBT youth

A CELEBRATION to mark LGBT History Month is being held in East Lothian this month featuring a special film screening and choral performance.

The event is inspired by the It Gets Better project, launched two years ago in reaction to the number of student suicides caused by bullying at school.

Author Dan Savage and his partner Terry Miller created a YouTube video to inspire LGBT youth, which has led to more than 25,000 videos being posted online and watched by more than 3 million people.

Pupils at Knox Academy in Haddington created their own film where they interviewed local gay people, which will be shown at the event.

LGBT choir Loud and Proud will also give a performance.

Councillor Ruth Currie, East Lothian Council’s equalities champion, said: “It Gets Better offers the opportunity to discover how LGBT youth can rise above such discrimination.”

The celebration is at Haddington Town House, from 7pm to 9pm on Thursday.
