Euthanasia talks to beat legal probe

A CONTROVERSIAL “practical workshop” on euthanasia will go ahead today despite claims by the Catholic Church it could be breaking the law.

Dr Philip Nitschke, dubbed Australia’s Dr Death, was due to tell an audience at the art space in St Mark’s Unitarian Church in Castle Terrace, about “reliable DIY end of life strategies that do not require travel to Switzerland”.

Scottish Catholic spokesman Peter Kearney had urged the police to investigate whether the workshop was breaking the law.

But a spokeswoman for Exit International, which organised today’s event, said the police had not been in touch.

The Rev Maud Robinson, minister at St Mark’s, said the church had checked with the police.

“We received an assurance there was nothing illegal about it and it is going ahead as planned,” he said.
