WWF calls for green spending

ENVIRONMENTAL campaigners will today call on finance secretary John Swinney to abandon plans for large one-off infrastructure projects and instead pump money into schemes that will benefit the whole country.

WWF Scotland claimed more than 10,000 jobs could be created if Mr Swinney used next month’s draft budget to finance projects such as installing more home insulation and “active travel” schemes to encourage more cycling and walking.

Dan Barlow, the charity’s head of policy, said a “street-by-street” programme to install insulation and make homes more energy- efficient would spread the economic benefits across Scotland.
