Veterans take case to MSPs

A GROUP of nuclear test veterans and their relatives were at Holyrood yesterday to continue their campaign for recognition and compensation from the UK government.

They attended a debate led by SNP MSP Christina McKelvie who called on the UK government to do its duty of care for those involved in nuclear weapons tests in the 1950s.

Only around 1,000 British nuclear test veterans survive, including 70 in Scotland.

Many of them suffer ill health and argue that the radiation to which they were exposed caused cancers, infertility and high rates of miscarriage, along with rare degenerative diseases.
