Scottish Natural Heritage looking for new chairman

SCOTTISH Natural Heritage today began the search for a successor to chairman Andrew Thin, who is leaving his post at the environmental organisation in March next year.

Mr Thin has been chairman of SNH for the past seven years.

Professionals interested in the promotion, care and sustainable management of Scotland’s nature are being urged to apply for the £46,000-a-year post.

Mr Thin said: “Scottish Parliament and Ministers look to SNH to help secure the sustainable management of nature and landscape. That’s a huge responsibility, given that nature is our greatest asset and the Board has a vital role in making sure it is fulfilled effectively and efficiently.”

Current expertise on the SNH board include farming, estate management, fisheries research, marine pollution, environmental management, energy, education, aquaculture and wildlife management.

Mr Thin said the wide range of expertise on the board was crucial to its success. He said: “As nature and landscape underpin so many aspects of Scottish life, including commercial interests, recreation, health and education, the organisation needs to be in tune with all these sectors and understand how they rely on and use our natural resources.

“It’s not necessary to have a detailed understanding of science and the natural environment, as that is already represented on the Board and among SNH employees. What is needed is the experience and ability to lead a large and complex public service organisation in a non-executive capacity.”

An SNH spokesman said: “The successful candidate will lead the board in its provision of strategic leadership to SNH and make sure it delivers on Government priorities.”
