Scotland’s weather: Ice warnings for eastern parts

A yellow weather warning of snow and ice is in place until midday, with the Met Office saying that surfaces could freeze over, leading to hazardous travelling conditions.

Slippery conditions are expected in eastern parts of Scotland as well across Northern Ireland, where dense freezing fog is likely to lead to reduced visibility for motorists.

A yellow Be Aware warning for snow and ice remains in place for the north west of England and the Midlands.

Temperatures reached a spine-tingling -9.4C (15F) in Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands overnight, while Katesbridge in Co Down fell to -2C (28F).

The north of England hovered around freezing.

Met Office forecaster Charlie Powell said: “It will be a rather chilly start, not desperately cold, but it should be fairly dry for most parts.

“We are going to see increased cloud, strengthening winds and some rain later today for the north west of the country.”

Yesterday heavy snow caused travel chaos for commuters in some parts, with one car skidding off an icy road and crashing into the front of a house.

Yorkshire, the Midlands and the west coast of Scotland all saw some snowfall, with Leeds Bradford Airport being forced to close temporarily.

In Sheffield, a red Ford careered through the front window of a house in Argyle Road after losing control in the treacherous conditions.

It was pictured by passers-by after it mounted the kerb, drove through the garden wall and into the property.
