Scotland’s weather: Flood, ice warnings for east

WARNINGS of flooding then ice were issued for eastern Scotland today, with heavy rain expected to be followed by plunging temperatures.

Eleven flood warnings were in force for Perthshire and Angus, where the Scottish Environment Protection Agency said immediate action was required because flooding was expected.

The Met Office has given a yellow - be prepared - severe weather warning for ice across the eastern half of Scotland overnight.

The flood warnings include for Brechin, where River Street is threatened by rising levels of the River South East until late tonight.

The river could also flood properties along a ten-mile stretch west of the town as far as Murthill.

Other warnings include for farmland from the Rivers Isla, Tay and Tummel.

The Met Office ice warning, in force from 8pm tonight until 10am tomorrow, stretches from Caithness to the Borders.

A spokesman said: “The band of frontal rainfall affecting parts of eastern Scotland will slowly clear away eastwards later on Sunday, leaving many surfaces wet or damp. “Clearing skies overnight will then allow temperatures to fall below freezing, leading to a risk of ice formation on untreated surfaces.

“The public should be aware of the potential for difficult driving conditions.”

Traffic Scotland, the official travel information service, said gritters would cover all trunk roads except for some in the west and south west.
