Rescuers bid to save pilot whale at Portmahomack

MEMBERS of the public and animal welfare officers have been trying to help a stranded long-finned pilot whale to return to the sea, after it beached at Portmahomack.

The Scottish SPCA confirmed that three whales had become stranded at the beach in Easter Ross early on Wednesday, with one dying and another being helped back to the sea.

Attempts to return the third whale to the sea are ongoing, with British Divers Marine Life Rescue assisting.

A spokeswoman for the SSPCA added that members of the public had joined forces with police officers and coastguard to return one of the stranded animals to the sea, where it swam off.
