Glasgow warms to green energy

RECYCLED rubbish could be used to heat hundreds of homes in Scotland’s largest city, following the signing of a new green energy deal.

Plans for a new recycling plant on the site of a former incinerator in Polmadie, Glasgow, have been agreed between Glasgow City Council and UK renewable energy and waste company Viridor.

The new incinerator plant would recycle around 200,000 tonnes of waste a year, to produce heat and power for social housing.

Council leader Gordon Matheson said: “This project will heat homes and power public buildings, create skilled jobs and support apprenticeships. It is our opportunity to secure a future that is cleaner, more affordable and sees the city’s waste work for the benefit of Glaswegians.”

Viridor now has six renewable energy centres under construction or planned across the UK.
