Fun and games as Dolphins play with a Jellyfish

A BABY dolphin was caught on camera playing head tennis with an unlucky jellyfish in an impressive display of sporting skills.

The game, which saw the jellyfish tossed into the air by the playful mammal, came a few minutes after an adult dolphin swallowed a whole salmon headfirst as onlookers watched at the Moray Firth.

The wildlife spectacle unfolded at Chanory Point near Fortrose on the Black Isle as the Firth’s resident dolphins were swimming by. The show of nature was captured by photographer Peter Jolly, highlighting the reputation of the narrow peninsula for being a “hotspot” for dolphin watching.

The baby dolphin, which was swimming with its mother, came close enough to shore for Mr Jolly to get shots of its antics. He said: “At first I thought it was water splashing but then I realised it was a jellyfish being headed up in the air. The calf seemed to be enjoying the game of head tennis. I’ve been there often to photograph the dolphins, but I’ve never seen anything like this before.”

A spokesman for Whale and Dolphin Conservation said: “This shows the dolphins’ playful nature. They are very intelligent mammals and full of mischief. Sounds like they were showing off and enjoying themselves. Chanory Point is a great place to see them.”
